If you want to understand why it is difficult to keep your kitchen clean, just check out the refrigerator first. For effective house cleaning, this is one of the areas that can easily create more work than expected.
The latest data on Malaysia’s households helps explain why.
According to the findings by the Department of Statistics Malaysia in July 2026, the main cause of food wastage among households was food expiration, accounting for 19.3% of the respondents.
Also, 18.1% of food wastage was due to leftovers kept in the refrigerator/freezer for too long.
79.3% of Malaysian households confirmed that they do not segregate food waste from other household waste.
These figures are often presented as a food-wastage problem.
There is a cleaning problem here as well at Jashan.
Kitchen dirt often begins before anything reaches the floor
Think about the average home where food is stored.
Drawers will be used to store vegetables. Cooked rice will be kept in a container. To-go boxes will be kept in the refrigerator. Food gets spilled into the cabinets. Oil is spilled at the stove. There may be something that needs to be disposed of at the back of the refrigerator.
Once the food reaches the rubbish bin, it may create the need for multiple cleanings.
It would be unwise to judge the cleaning process by the cleanliness of the kitchen floor as this isn’t what it is about.
An immaculate kitchen floor does not necessarily mean that there won’t be a sticky refrigerator, foods in the drawers, food under the appliances, and dirty rubbish bin cabinet. These areas can easily become part of the wider house cleaning work required to keep the home properly maintained.
The refrigerator needs a routine, not an emergency clean
The DOSM findings about expired food and forgotten leftovers suggest a straightforward link between refrigerator cleaning and food management.
However, before the refrigerator develops a bad odour or becomes dirty, one can simply clean it briefly each week.
Before grocery shopping, check:
- leftovers that are unlikely to be eaten;
- produce beginning to spoil;
- leaking containers;
- shelves with fresh spills;
- food approaching its expiry date.
This is not a complete refrigerator deep clean. The aim is to avoid small problems turning into big problems. Cleaning the mess underneath an old box and disposing of it takes a minute. This same spot can become very messy when spills, packaging, and leftover food build up over several weeks.
It can also help families to do an inventory check before buying more.
DOSM also found that 15.2% of food wastage was caused by over-buying and 15.1% by over-cooking.
The rubbish bin is part of the kitchen
Malaysian families ought to think about more than just the bag. When food waste is thrown together with the rest of the garbage, there is a risk that the liquid and any food that remains could seep through inside the trash bag to the lid and even into the surrounding furniture and the floor below. One additional advantage that has been noted by SWCorp’s community waste programs is that source separation has allowed the odours from food waste to be minimized.
The “clean” principle is also important for food waste disposal or composting programs when a household cannot use the program. The area around the trash bin requires a special cleaning procedure. Remove leaking bags as quickly as possible. Don’t hide odours with fragrances; rather, clean them out. Examine the floor and wall around the bin. If the bin is in a cabinet, examine the cabinet also. This tiny area requires more effort during the process of house cleaning.
Build the cleaning schedule around use
A kitchen does not need every surface deep-cleaned at the same frequency.
At Jashan, we find it more useful to think in layers.
After cooking: deal with fresh food residue, grease and spills while they are still easy to remove.
Every few days: clean frequently used counters, sinks, stovetop areas and the rubbish zone.
Once a week: check the refrigerator, wipe obvious internal spills and clear food that should no longer be stored.
Periodically: give appliances, cabinet interiors, under-sink areas, refrigerator shelves and harder-to-reach spaces more detailed attention.
The last point is where kitchen cleaning services go beyond normal cleaning. No matter how well ordinary cleaning is done, it will not reach the places that a professional kitchen-cleaning job at Jashan’s can: refrigerators, microwaves, various other machines, cabinets, underneath the sink, grease-covered cooking spaces, etc. The intention is not to have continuous cleaning every week.
Rather, it is because dirt builds up in places that are accessed every day.
This is also why a consistent house cleaning routine can make a difference before dirt and food residue become harder to manage.
Clean while the information is still available
However, there is one more very pragmatic reason for getting the rooms cleaned sooner.
You may be able to identify which container leaked in the refrigerator from a newly appeared orange spot. But three weeks later, you will have absolutely no idea what caused this stain and how to deal with it. The same applies to grease spots, stains left by sauces, and other signs of dirt inside the cabinet.
Thus, cleaning soon after the problem occurs saves us a lot of effort in understanding its nature and solving it. That is why we don’t think of professional house cleaning as a replacement for all your little household practices. In fact, they should work together. Daily efforts can prevent mess from accumulating. It allows the professional service to use their time to clean those spots that really need it.
The cleaner kitchen starts before cleaning day
The new data on food waste in Malaysia offers a valuable takeaway for householders beyond simply having shiny countertops. Most of the items that end up in the garbage have previously been in the cupboards, refrigerator, or freezer. This is where the cleaning process begins. An improved cleaning strategy, therefore, is not only about what needs cleaning at the moment but also about what needs to be done. It involves asking, “What needs to be used?”, “What needs to be removed?”, and “What has been there too long without notice?” As the routine becomes regular, the cleaning becomes easier since fewer problems arise in the first place. A regular approach to house cleaning can therefore help keep the kitchen cleaner before the next professional cleaning visit.
